Chiefly papers of Herbert Augustine Claiborne (1819-1902) of Richmond, Va., lawyer in partnership with Chauncey Goodrich Griswold (1802- 1883). Include family correspondence while Claiborne was a student at the College of William and Mary, legal correspondence, 1841-1859, concerning his law practice, and papers documenting his service in the Subsistence Dept., C.S.A. Army of the Potomac. Also include correspondence and accounts, 1841-1854, of his law partner; correspondence and accounts of his wife, Mary Anna (McGuire) Claiborne (1819-1864); and papers of his father, Herbert Augustine Claiborne (1784-1841) of "Cottage" plantation, King and Queen County, Va. Also represented are the Lewis and McGuire families, in particular Dr. Robert Lewis McGuire (1822-1876) of Fredericksburg, Va. Early papers primarily concern the Browne family of Massachusetts but include the diary, 1744, of William Black (1720-1782) of "Stratford," Westmoreland County, Va., while serving as secretary to a commission appointed to negotiate a treaty with the Indians of the Six Nations.
